Interview 17.4.2007 - originally at Teenhollywood.com

Cute 24-year-old U.K. actor Charlie Cox is star-chasing. We don't mean he's a stalker! In the summer fantasy, fairy tale film Stardust, Charlie plays a lovesick young man who follows a shooting star in the hope of grabbing some of it for his lady love (Sienna Miller) only to discover that the "star" has turned into a feisty gal played by Claire Danes! You might have seen this hottie in Casanova or caught him in the Brit-produced sci-fi TV series "A For Andromeda". Charlie, who still lives in the U.K., was visiting L.A. for a little over a week and we were lucky enough to grab him... some time with him for a phone chat that is.

Get an early introduction to the star of a summer blockbuster, right here on TeenHollywood!

TeenHollywood: Have you done or seen anything fun in L.A. yet?

Charlie:[soft Brit accent] I actually know Los Angeles briefly because I've been here a couple of times. I've vaguely aware of its geography and how it works but I've got a friend with me and I'm going to try to take him to see one of the studios.

TeenHollywood: That'll be fun. You live in London? Some notes on you say that you live with your brother and your dog.

Charlie: [laughs] That's old information. I don't know where they got that. I never lived with my brother AND my dog. My dog died but he had a good life.

TeenHollywood: You've done a lot of costume or period films. Are you comfortable in that genre or are you dying to do a more modern piece?

Charlie: A lot of people ask me that but when you start out, you take any job you can get really. It just so happens there have been a lot of them. Most period stuff, they go directly to England. If you're a young British actor and especially if you've got long hair, which I do, they're on your doorstep but I'd like to get out and do some modern stuff.

TeenHollywood: Would you compare Stardust to The Princess Bride? Is it funny, romantic and adventurous?

Charlie: Yeah. There are elements to it that are very similar. At the heart of it is a very classic fairy tale but it is also very, very funny and doesn't take itself immensely seriously.

TeenHollywood: What was the audition process like for you? Did you have to do a scene with Claire Danes or Sienna Miller?

Charlie: I auditioned with a few people. By the time I auditioned with Claire I think I already had the part. But, I auditioned a lot. There was a first round and a couple of recalls and I had to read with different people. It went on a bit.

TeenHollywood: What was the biggest challenge of making the film for you?

Charlie: I think the biggest challenge was working that consistently over such a long period of time. I worked pretty much every day for four months. If they weren't shooting a scene that I was in that particular day, I was doing second unit stuff. So that was the toughest challenge; going from playing supporting roles where you are required a couple of days here, a couple there to going on a movie set where I'm working long hours every day. That was really, really tough.

TeenHollywood: Was there a chance for any of the cast to relax and go hang out after shooting?

Charlie: That really just happened with Claire and myself. We were the only ones working all the time. The other actors would come and go, doing other stuff. A lot of them, like Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert DeNiro, as soon as they'd finished shooting their chunk they would go back home. So, me and Claire hung out.

TeenHollywood: Where exactly did you shoot?

Charlie: Well, all of it was in the United Kingdom and like a day and a half in Iceland but the rest of it was either in London or in Suffolk in the countryside. Some of it was in Scotland on the Isle of Skye.

TeenHollywood: Oh, I've been there. It's just beautiful.

Charlie: Yeah, it is.

TeenHollywood: How are you like your character Tristan?

Charlie: Well, I related to Tristan in terms of where he was in his life, that place between boyhood and manhood where you just can't really figure it all out quite yet. He's no longer a boy and not yet a man and everything is awkward and he can't get it together. I remember that place very well where nothing seems to just flow. You're stepping on people's toes all the time.

TeenHollywood: And how are you totally different from Tristan?

Charlie: [laughs] Well, I think he's a lot braver than I am. I'm most impressed by his courage. I question whether, if I was put in any of the situations he was, as unlikely as that sounds, whether I would cower or take control and be the courageous one.

TeenHollywood: Did you ever read the novel "Stardust"?

Charlie: Yeah. I read it after I got the part. I'd not heard of [author] Neil Gaiman before. I read it afterwards and loved it. There are extra characters and the story is not entirely similar but the fairy tale is certainly the same. The basics are all there. But any film that's made from a book, people who loved the book are always going to prefer the book to the film. The film is one person's manifestation of the book.

TeenHollywood: You have scenes with Robert DeNiro. You fence. What was that like?

Charlie: I was very aware that, if I was to make a mistake and take his eye out, you wouldn't be seeing a lot of me but, no, it was really, really fun. That will always be a great anecdote for me, that I got to fence with Robert DeNiro. He was teaching me.

TeenHollywood: What was it like working with Sienna and Claire?

Charlie: Well, Sienna, I'd worked with before [in Casanova] so it was nice. When I worked with her before I remember really enjoying the creative process with her..just seeing where it goes and what happens. I've been a fan of Claire's for a long time. I remember seeing her in Romeo and Juliet and who didn't fall in love with her in that? Claire is just a wonderful actress. I think they both are. I did a lot of rehearsals with Claire beforehand so I think we had more time to figure each other out and how we were going to do [the roles]. We had a lot of fun with it. The scenes at the beginning of the film are very much getting at each other and that was really fun. It was almost like older sister, younger brother. That was really enjoyable. It's hard to compare any two actors. Both are really great.

TeenHollywood: Did you have to learn any new skills for this movie?

Charlie: I had to learn how to ride a horse. I had ridden but very badly. I had to learn properly. I didn't fall off but I came close a couple of times. I had to get better at horse riding and better at fencing. I had to fence in Casanova and I learned that at drama school.

TeenHollywood: What artists do you like musically?

Charlie: I like so many different ones. There's an American guy called Josh Ritter that I'm a big fan of. Not widely known yet but he will be. He's kind of folky and I'm really into lyrics in any sort of music. I love Nick Drake and all that lot.

TeenHollywood: Do you sing or play an instrument yourself?

Charlie: I kind of play the piano. I do not sing. I'm very aware that I'm not a singer. I play the piano but I don't read music terribly well. I like to just have a tinkle with it.

TeenHollywood: What do you love to do when not working?

Charlie: Oh, I ride a motorbike, play football [soccer], tennis, all that.

TeenHollywood: If a lady wished to go out with you, what qualities would she have to have?

Charlie: She has to be vaguely intelligent, sense of humor, all the obvious stuff. I like to joke around and laugh a lot.

TeenHollywood: And where would you like to go on your date?

Charlie: Somewhere not too posh. I'm not really into wining and dining. I like grabbing a couple of cokes and a pizza and chilling out. There's a time and place for going to fancy restaurants but when you're getting to know each other, it just makes it more comfortable [the pizza and coke date].

TeenHollywood: What would you like movie goers to know about Stardust and about you?

Charlie: You've just got to see the film. The less you know about it the more you'll get from it. See the trailer beforehand. Just go with it and see what happens. And about me? That I'm not seventeen maybe. I'm twenty-four.

TeenHollywood: What is going on now for you?

Charlie: I'm reading a lot of things. There are a few things that I'm hoping to do very, very soon but I'm planning. I'll do another film with Matthew Vaughn, the director of Stardust, at the end of the year. It's a World War I movie and I'll be doing something called Stone of Destiny in May. It's a Scottish heist movie. They've just started casting the other parts. I'm really excited about that. The director is Charlie Martin Smith [actor/director, started out acting in the classic American Graffiti].

TeenHollywood: Any final message?

Charlie: Come see the movie and see where it takes you.
